How the founder of the Telegram messaging app stood up to the Kremlin — and won

MOSCOW — The man who took on the Kremlin and won is rarely heard from: a tech nomad in self-imposed exile with a reclusive aura and signature all-black attire as a nod to “The Matrix.” Two years ago, Pavel Durov refused to grant Russian security services access to users’ encrypted messages on his popular Telegram messaging app, then a favorite of Russian opposition groups. The reply from authorities was either submit or become wiped off the country’s digital map. Neither happened. Using a combination of wily cyber-dodging tactics and the force of Telegram’s growing reach, the 35-year-old Russian-born entrepreneur humiliated and outmaneuvered Russia’s state telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor. Scores of unrelated websites were tangled up as collateral damage in Telegram’s hide-and-seek with Russia’s Internet minders. But, through it all, Telegram continued to work — so well that even state agencies and government officials, including Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, continued usi

Infographics for SEO: Most Underrated Google Ranking Factor

Infographics have been a popular online marketing tool for several years. Not only do they create a visually appealing, consumable piece of content, they can also boost engagement on social media and help improve your website’s search engine optimization. How do infographics help boost SEO? Here are some of the reasons how Infographics can really come in handy for SEO and other purposes: A Great Linking Building Strategy: A significant component of successful SEO is link building, and infographics can help with that. They are a shareable, linkable piece of content that is easily consumed using a variety of methods. Social media, blogs, and email marketing can all use infographics to improve SEO effectively. Companies can email them out to other blog sites, share them on social media, and when online users start to do the same, your backlinks continue to grow. According to Charlie Tatum: "In 2020, we’ll continue to see a greater emphasis on guest blogging and visual content sha

Amazon warehouse workers in Germany will strike Monday because of coronavirus infections

Amazon workers at six sites across Germany plan to strike Monday because dozens of staff members at its logistics centers have been infected with the coronavirus,  union officials told  Reuters . The union says the company is prioritizing profits over workers’ safety. Labor union Verdi says “at least 30 to 40 colleagues were infected” with the virus, according to  Reuters . The strike will last 48 hours and be conducted with the motto “good and healthy work.” Amazon warehouse workers in Germany have struck  several times  in recent years, over  worker pay  and  conditions . In recent months, Amazon warehouse workers in the US have staged  protests  over what they say are unsafe working conditions, and  walked off the job  in several cities. Workers criticized the company for  not notifying workers  when colleagues tested positive for the coronavirus. A group of three Amazon warehouse workers in New York  filed suit against the company  earlier this month, alleging the company put them

NASA will pay you to design a space toilet that works in lunar gravity

Image
If you could create a toilet worthy of space travel, what would it look like?  NASA  is preparing to  return to the moon by 2024  and it needs help developing a new way for astronauts to go about their business on their journeys to the lunar surface and back.  NASA issued a call Thursday  asking for ideas for the ultimate space toilet with the  Lunar Loo Challenge . The winner of the space toilet challenge could win $35,000 (approximately £28,000, A$51,000) for the top concept.  Although space toilets are already in use (the  International Space Station is scheduled to get an upgrade soon ), they are designed for microgravity only. Microgravity is when there's weightlessness in space, and NASA's toilet tech has taken care of that problem already. But the new toilets need to be able to work in lunar gravity as well. Lunar gravity is approximately one-sixth of Earth's gravity, so our waste moves a little differently on the moon.   In addition to having the new toilet function

Facebook and Google should audit algorithms that boost fake news, say UK Lords

Image
The global  coronavirus pandemic  has left governments, the  tech industry  and citizens reeling, not just from the devastating effects of the virus, but from the slew of misinformation that has accompanied it. How best to tackle the spread of false information  is a subject of global debate , especially with regard to just how much responsibility the tech platforms hosting it bear. In the UK, the House of Lords Democracy and Digital Technologies Committee published a report on Monday featuring 45 recommendations for the UK government to take action against the "pandemic of misinformation" and disinformation. Failing to take the threat seriously would undermine democracy, causing it to "decline into irrelevance," it said.  During the outbreak, the threat of misinformation and disinformation has taken on a new urgency  as conspiracy theories have flourished on online platforms . The worst of these have put people's health directly at risk by falsely endorsing dan

Microsoft makes it harder for businesses to avoid Windows 10 updates

The business-focused versions of Windows 10 have normally let you avoid major updates for up to a year, which can be helpful if you either value stability at all costs or just don’t like change. You might not have quite so much breathing room going forward, though. As  WindowsTimes  and  Gizmodo  have noticed, Windows 10 version 2004 has reduced manual deferrals for Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise and Education updates to 35 days (just as long as for Home) and pulled the option from the Windows Update settings in Advanced Options. If you want to keep deferring updates, you’ll need to change local Group Policy to match. This is meant to “prevent confusion” and help make use of a policy targeting PCs whose version is nearly out of service, Microsoft said. There are advantages to shrinking the deferral period. This keeps PCs reasonably current with features and support, and can help with security if there are any improvements inherent to the major update. This might not please companies that t

Another 53 iOS apps besides TikTok are grabbing clipboard data

TikTok may be ending its  nosy clipboard reading  on iOS, but that doesn’t mean other app developers are mending their ways. Security researcher Tommy Mysk told  Ars Technica  in an  interview  that an additional 53 apps identified in March are still indiscriminately capturing universal clipboard data when they open, potentially sharing sensitive data with other nearby devices using the same Apple ID. The apps are major titles, too — they’d normally be trustworthy. The behavior is visible in news apps for  Fox News , the  New York Times  and the  Wall Street Journal . You’ll also find it in games like  Bejeweled ,  Fruit Ninja  and  PUBG Mobile . Social apps like Viber, Weibo and Zoosk. Some utility and media apps do this as well, including AccuWeather,  DAZN  and Overstock. Some app developers have vowed to alter their behavior. Alongside TikTok, 10% Happier and Hotel Tonight are cutting back their clipboard use. There are apps that make smart use of the clipboard, too. Pixelmator, fo
